FoodTec Award 2012 in GOLD for Uhde High Pressure Technologies GmbH and Multivac

Together with the package manufacturer Multivac Uhde High Pressure Technologies will be awarded the Foodtec Award in Gold at the Anuga Foodtec in March 2012 for its innovative method of food packaging and preservation. This method is based on the preservation of completely packaged food at high pressure (6,000 bar) exclusively.

Due to the integration of that method into automated packaging lines up to four tons of preserved food per hour can be processed. Further to that, it is just the combination of MAP packaged products and the HP treatment which results in a synergy effect which so far has been technically unrealisable, because CO2 in conjunction with high pressure results in additional stressing of microorganisms and therefore in an optimised inactivation rate in the end.

The gentle process of high-pressure processing realised by the method this prize is awarded for fulfils consumer wishes for untreated and natural food – without preservatives and additives - at the best. Simultaneously, the strict requirements and industry’s expectations concerning longer preservability are met and a contribution to cost efficiency is made.

The prize is awarded every three years during the fair by the DLG for innovations in the food and supplier industry. The prize will be awarded within this year’s Anuga Foodtec Fair (27 to 30 March 2012) at the Cologne Congress Centre on Tuesday, 27 March.

7th LDPE Plant Improvement Conference

LDPE Plant Improvement Conference 2012 to take place May 21, 2012  – May 22, 2012 in Dortmund, Germany

After six successful years of hosting the Global LDPE Maintenance Workshop we have decided to rename our workshop to “LDPE Plant Improvement Conference” and to adjust our focus in that direction.

The reason is that with the increasing success of our event the number of participants became so high, that an orderly “hands-on” training with high pressure equipment was not any more feasible in this context. This will be separated out in small group training events dedicated to the needs of LPDE plant maintenance personnel. The dates for these events will be announced regularly on our website.

In the last years we have learnt that for our clients the key topic is the continuous improvement of their LDPE and EVA plants in terms of safety, productivity and output. Any plant owner who falls back on this perpetual task in the long run will see his profit melting down. Intelligent networking with industry peers and specialised suppliers and consultants is a strategic corner stone to stay on top of the technological and industrial development and Uhde provides the ground for this activity serving the interest of all parties involved.

Please contact Mrs. Anja Ebinghaus (Conference Organizer) for further information on agenda, invitation, etc.  (anja.ebinghaus@thyssenkrupp.com)

We would be very pleased to welcome you to Germany again.

Uhde High Pressure Technologies GmbH has developed the latest generation of high-pressure filters for water jet cutters

For the successful and faultless operation of a water jet cutter it is decisive to treat the raw water (tap water) such that it meets maximum requirements concerning perfect water. The essential link between high-pressure pump and cutting valve is the high-pressure filter.

That is the point where Uhde High Pressure Technologies GmbH‘s latest development sets new standards with respect to water quality, the maximum durability of all high-pressure components used (e.g. water nozzles, valves, pivots etc.), service lives – all this with maximum flexibility as to mounting, dismounting and installation position as well as simplified handling by customers and maintenance.

We offer the new HP filter with two pressure levels: for cutters of up to 4,000 bar and – at this point we are one of only three suppliers worldwide – up to 6,000 bar (fig. 1). Nevertheless, Uhde guarantees compatibility to all manufacturers and designs of water jet cutting plants and water jet cutting systems in the market!

Fig. 1. HP filter: 4,000 bar (right) and 6,000 bar.

The centrepiece of our new HP filter is the filter cartridge made of a metal fabric composite. Your advantage compared to the usual cartridges made of ceramics or sintered metals is the large filter surface (3,400 mm2) permitting high flow rates without almost any pressure losses and blockage. In addition, maintenance and cleaning are without problem for the customer (fig. 2).

Fig. 2. Example of application: HP filter 6,000 bar, mounted directly to the connector block of the HP pump which permits easy maintenance.

It is best Uhde tradition that the autofrettage process meets maximum requirements as to lifetime and quality!

All facts and advantages of the new high-pressure filter at a glance:

  • Maximum purity of the cutting water

  • Longer lifetimes of the HP components thanks to less wear

  • Easy mounting and dismounting

  • Flexible installation position

  • Easy cleaning and maintenance by the customer

  • Two designs: 4,000 bar and 6,000 bar

  • Compatibility to all manufacturers, designs and years of construction

  • Filter cartridges made of metal fabric composite (large surface, high flow rate, low pressure losses)

  • Uhde autofrettage extends lifetime

Technical data:

  • Possible pipe ports on both HP filters: 9/16“-18UNF /for HP pipe ø 1/4“ (6.35 mm)/, 3/4“-16UNF /for HP pipe ø 3/8“(9.52 mm)/, 11/8“-12UNF /for HP pipe ø 9/16“(14.3 mm)/.

  • Available filter cartridges: 1 μm (standard), 5 μm, 20 μm

Food is preserved by high pressure

The preservation of food by heating-up, salt (pickling), smoke (smoking) or simply drying has been known to mankind for centuries. Uhde High Pressure Technologies and MULTIVAC, the worldwide leading manufacturer of packaging solutions, have trodden new paths with respect to the high-pressure processing of food.

Food packed by high-pressure processing is exposed to a high pressure of up to 6,000 bar. To make it clear: This corresponds to the pressure which would theoretically be gauged at a point being 60 km below sea surface. Thus, harmful microorganisms in food will be destroyed without the use of heat or preservatives.

Therefore, the objective of High Pressure Processing (HPP) is the highly product-sparing reduction or inactivation of unwanted microorganisms in food to extend its preservation on the one hand and improve food safety on the other. The HPP method is of interest not to the food industry only, but - because of the new chances - to the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries as well.

The advantages of the HPP method are as follows:
Safety and preservation of food are increased which is likewise advantageous to consumers and producers. As processing is implemented in the final packaging material, no recontamination can occur during filling-up, and in many cases producers can do without the addition of preservatives completely. So, flavour and nutrient content are maintained to the greatest possible extent and the product is not damaged thermally, this not least because the product is processed evenly, since high pressure acts on the food directly and from all sides.

So far, almost exclusively HP processed products in vacuum packaging have been marketed. Thanks to combined know-hows of Uhde High Pressure Technologies and MULTIVAC it is possible for the first time to safely process food packaged under protective gas atmosphere (MAP) by means of the HPP method. In addition, MULTIVAC offers the possibility to integrate the HPP plant into automated packaging lines, which makes HPP processing attractive to food manufacturers and packagers under economic aspects as well.
