The conference opening was held on Sunday evening in the Borussia Dortmund Stadium VIP lounge. We had a chance to grasp the atmosphere in Germany’s football champion home court, enjoying a wonderful warm summer night. On Monday evening we enjoyed our traditional sports event together. Some rounds of beach volleyball combined with Asian wok-cooking can do wonders to digest all the technical sessions of the day. During our conference dinner – at a lovely small and creative varieté theatre – we announced the winners of the best paper award of the conference: Mr. Pornsak from PttPE Thailand (for plant operators) and Mr. Gaechter from Prognost (for plant suppliers). Thank you very much, and... Keep on Improving!

Outlook for 2013
The 8th LDPE Plant Improvement Conference will be held on April 24 to 26, 2013, in Qingdao, China.
Qingdao is a “medium size” Chinese city of 8 million people, nicely located at the coast vis-à-vis Korea, only one hour from Beijing and Seoul. It has a wonderful mild climate and is famous for some old German architecture and the Tsingtao Brewery. So if you are ready to explore the Chinese high pressure network with us and try some fresh Shangdong style sea food, here’s your chance! The detailed invitation will follow in a few months.

FoodTec Award 2012 in GOLD for Uhde High Pressure Technologies GmbH and Multivac
Together with the package manufacturer Multivac Uhde High Pressure Technologies will be awarded the Foodtec Award in Gold at the Anuga Foodtec in March 2012 for its innovative method of food packaging and preservation. This method is based on the preservation of completely packaged food at high pressure (6,000 bar) exclusively.
Due to the integration of that method into automated packaging lines up to four tons of preserved food per hour can be processed. Further to that, it is just the combination of MAP packaged products and the HP treatment which results in a synergy effect which so far has been technically unrealisable, because CO2 in conjunction with high pressure results in additional stressing of microorganisms and therefore in an optimised inactivation rate in the end.

The gentle process of high-pressure processing realised by the method this prize is awarded for fulfils consumer wishes for untreated and natural food – without preservatives and additives - at the best. Simultaneously, the strict requirements and industry’s expectations concerning longer preservability are met and a contribution to cost efficiency is made.
The prize is awarded every three years during the fair by the DLG for innovations in the food and supplier industry. The prize will be awarded within this year’s Anuga Foodtec Fair (27 to 30 March 2012) at the Cologne Congress Centre on Tuesday, 27 March.

7th LDPE Plant Improvement Conference
LDPE Plant Improvement Conference 2012 to take place May 21, 2012 – May 22, 2012 in Dortmund, Germany
After six successful years of hosting the Global LDPE Maintenance Workshop we have decided to rename our workshop to “LDPE Plant Improvement Conference” and to adjust our focus in that direction.
The reason is that with the increasing success of our event the number of participants became so high, that an orderly “hands-on” training with high pressure equipment was not any more feasible in this context. This will be separated out in small group training events dedicated to the needs of LPDE plant maintenance personnel. The dates for these events will be announced regularly on our website.
In the last years we have learnt that for our clients the key topic is the continuous improvement of their LDPE and EVA plants in terms of safety, productivity and output. Any plant owner who falls back on this perpetual task in the long run will see his profit melting down. Intelligent networking with industry peers and specialised suppliers and consultants is a strategic corner stone to stay on top of the technological and industrial development and Uhde provides the ground for this activity serving the interest of all parties involved.
Please contact Mrs. Anja Ebinghaus (Conference Organizer) for further information on agenda, invitation, etc. (anja.ebinghaus@thyssenkrupp.com)
We would be very pleased to welcome you to Germany again.

Uhde High Pressure Technologies GmbH has developed the latest generation of high-pressure filters for water jet cutters
For the successful and faultless operation of a water jet cutter it is decisive to treat the raw water (tap water) such that it meets maximum requirements concerning perfect water. The essential link between high-pressure pump and cutting valve is the high-pressure filter.
That is the point where Uhde High Pressure Technologies GmbH‘s latest development sets new standards with respect to water quality, the maximum durability of all high-pressure components used (e.g. water nozzles, valves, pivots etc.), service lives – all this with maximum flexibility as to mounting, dismounting and installation position as well as simplified handling by customers and maintenance.
We offer the new HP filter with two pressure levels: for cutters of up to 4,000 bar and – at this point we are one of only three suppliers worldwide – up to 6,000 bar (fig. 1). Nevertheless, Uhde guarantees compatibility to all manufacturers and designs of water jet cutting plants and water jet cutting systems in the market!

Fig. 1. HP filter: 4,000 bar (right) and 6,000 bar.
The centrepiece of our new HP filter is the filter cartridge made of a metal fabric composite. Your advantage compared to the usual cartridges made of ceramics or sintered metals is the large filter surface (3,400 mm2) permitting high flow rates without almost any pressure losses and blockage. In addition, maintenance and cleaning are without problem for the customer (fig. 2).

Fig. 2. Example of application: HP filter 6,000 bar, mounted directly to the connector block of the HP pump which permits easy maintenance.
It is best Uhde tradition that the autofrettage process meets maximum requirements as to lifetime and quality!
All facts and advantages of the new high-pressure filter at a glance:
Maximum purity of the cutting water
Longer lifetimes of the HP components thanks to less wear
Easy mounting and dismounting
Flexible installation position
Easy cleaning and maintenance by the customer
Two designs: 4,000 bar and 6,000 bar
Compatibility to all manufacturers, designs and years of construction
Filter cartridges made of metal fabric composite (large surface, high flow rate, low pressure losses)
Uhde autofrettage extends lifetime
Technical data:
Possible pipe ports on both HP filters: 9/16“-18UNF /for HP pipe ø 1/4“ (6.35 mm)/, 3/4“-16UNF /for HP pipe ø 3/8“(9.52 mm)/, 11/8“-12UNF /for HP pipe ø 9/16“(14.3 mm)/.

Food is preserved by high pressure
The preservation of food by heating-up, salt (pickling), smoke (smoking) or simply drying has been known to mankind for centuries. Uhde High Pressure Technologies and MULTIVAC, the worldwide leading manufacturer of packaging solutions, have trodden new paths with respect to the high-pressure processing of food.
Food packed by high-pressure processing is exposed to a high pressure of up to 6,000 bar. To make it clear: This corresponds to the pressure which would theoretically be gauged at a point being 60 km below sea surface. Thus, harmful microorganisms in food will be destroyed without the use of heat or preservatives.
Therefore, the objective of High Pressure Processing (HPP) is the highly product-sparing reduction or inactivation of unwanted microorganisms in food to extend its preservation on the one hand and improve food safety on the other. The HPP method is of interest not to the food industry only, but - because of the new chances - to the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries as well.
The advantages of the HPP method are as follows:
Safety and preservation of food are increased which is likewise advantageous to consumers and producers. As processing is implemented in the final packaging material, no recontamination can occur during filling-up, and in many cases producers can do without the addition of preservatives completely. So, flavour and nutrient content are maintained to the greatest possible extent and the product is not damaged thermally, this not least because the product is processed evenly, since high pressure acts on the food directly and from all sides.
So far, almost exclusively HP processed products in vacuum packaging have been marketed. Thanks to combined know-hows of Uhde High Pressure Technologies and MULTIVAC it is possible for the first time to safely process food packaged under protective gas atmosphere (MAP) by means of the HPP method. In addition, MULTIVAC offers the possibility to integrate the HPP plant into automated packaging lines, which makes HPP processing attractive to food manufacturers and packagers under economic aspects as well.

EuroBLECH 2010
More international than ever - 61.300 Visitors from all over the world
Uhde High Pressure Technologies exhibits 6,000 bar High Pressure Pumps for Waterjet Cutting Systems
For nearly half a century Uhde High Pressure Technologies GmbH in Hagen has already been designing and manufacturing ultrahigh-pressure pumps for industrial use. The development of 6,000 bar pumps for waterjet cutting systems is based on Uhde’s many years of experience in the design and construction of 14,000 bar autofrettage pumps and 6,000 bar high-pressure pumps for pasteurisation plants (HPP). In the year 2001 Uhde High Pressure Technologies GmbH was the first manufacturer to put a high-pressure pump system for an operating pressure of 6,000 bar into series production. The 6,000 bar HP pump type HPS 6045 was exhibited at the EuroBlech in Hanover. Due to 1,455 exhibitors from 43 countries the EuroBlech enjoys an excellent reputation. That is why we invited customers from all around the world to our Uhde High Pressure Technologies stand. Between pump demonstrations, negotiations and many good conversations there was also time to take a deep breath.
Conclusion: The EuroBlech is now a major event in our calendar and we will be there in 2012 (Oct. 23 – 27), too.

Maintenance Workshop 2010
Some impressions from the last Maintenance Workshop 2010:
High-pressure technologies from Hagen for the world – for 80 years now
Uhde High Pressure Technologies is a well-established company with a long tradition – and in July 2010 we celebrate our 80th anniversary!
It all started at a coal mine in Herne in the Ruhr Valley where Friedrich Uhde GmbH erected its first plant for ammonia synthesis. The incidental coke oven gas was meant to serve as process gas. First of all, Mr. Uhde expanded a workshop on the site of a coal mine in Herne for the fabrication of the required high-pressure equipment. By entry in the commercial register of Dortmund on July 22, 1930 the workshop evolved into the company Hochdruck-Apparatebau GmbH which soon moved its headquarters to Hagen on the outskirts of the Ruhr Valley.
Within only a few years Uhde Hochdruck-Apparatebau was able to make a name for itself in this special field and as early as in the mid thirties the company supplied high-pressure vessels, valves and pumps into the whole world. In most cases the equipment was used for ammonia synthesis or for various hydrogenation processes.
In the fifties the most important field of activity of Uhde Hagen developed: the large-scale industrial production of polyethylene at high pressures of up to 3,600 bar. Uhde supplied the complete process equipment of the plant as well as high-pressure pilot plants used to further the development of the process. In the year 1952 Uhde was taken over by the Hoechst group in Frankfurt which also manufactured and operated polyethylene plants later on. Thus, Uhde Hagen was able to gain valuable experience in the operation of LDPE plants.
Today, Uhde High Pressure Technologies covers a wide range of industrial high-pressure technologies – ranging from waterjet cutting, urea and LDPE equipment to turnkey high-pressure plants for the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry. Such a wide range of products would not be possible without the historical development and the confidence shown by our customers.
We thank all our customers, suppliers and fabrication partners for the confidence shown to us for many years and for the good cooperation.

For over 80 years - high pressure technology from Hagen for the world
We thank all our customers, suppliers and manufacturing partners for the long-term trust and good cooperation.
5th Global LDPE Maintenance Workshop
More than 90 participants from over 20 countries attended Uhde’s 5th Global LDPE Maintenance Workshop from June 7th to 9th, 2010. This year the workshop could be conveniently combined with the LDPE safety conference in Cologne and the Burckhardt compressor symposium in Winterthur, Switzerland.
In the morning sessions presentations were held on a great variety of important plant issues, from high level process aspects presented by the Technical University of Darmstadt to very practical maintenance issues like the cleaning of high pressure tubes from polymer residuals. To balance Uhde’s and other key industry supplier’s presentations also the User’s presented their point of view when it comes to operational and maintenance issues of equipment in their plants. For some older plants the original equipment manufacturers do not exist any more so that these User’s are especially keen for support and hints on how to improve their safe and efficient operations. The best User’s paper was elected by the participants to be Ahmed Al-Khaldi’s (Kemya) “MP Steam Waste Heat Boiler Head Flange Welds Defect & HP Tubes Bundle Heavy Scaling”. As a gesture of recognition of their contributions presenting Users received the legendary “Uhde High Pressure Salt & Pepper Shakers” duly marked with their serial numbers.
On Monday evening the customary sports event took place with football, beach volleyball and badminton. As usually, it was great fun to move the body after many hours of sitting or standing. The team sports were organised in multi-national teams – we felt like the United Nations at sports. A special treat for the tastes of so many different cultures from Brazil to Japan and South Africa to Norway, was the fresh wok at the spot according to the individual “specifications”.
On Tuesday evening the conference dinner was held in the traditional German steel works of Henrichshuette, which now is a steel and iron museum. Since many of us are at least “hobby metallurgists” we greatly enjoyed climbing up the old blast furnace and enjoying the view from the top. A cartoonist offered drawings for anyone interested, which caused many tears and laughers for the bystanders for his funny interpretations.
The Wednesday sessions were co-organised by Berstorff Extruders who did a wonderful job with a very high level presentation and an exhibition of some of their masterpieces: extruder shafts with their different functional designs. Mr. Pfeiffer from Berstorff received a very positive feed-back for his organisation with many thanks also from Uhde. On the way back from Berstorff we passed the lovely small town of Minden with opportunities for sight seeing, shopping or relaxing in the café at the market square in the city centre.
Uhde High Pressure Technologies joins in the 4th Uhde Fertiliser Symposium
On May 19-21, Uhde in Dortmund opened its doors for the 4th Uhde Fertiliser Symposium. About 200 experts exchanged information and trends concerning the complete Uhde Fertiliser Portfolio. During the three-day event, the participants gained insight into the latest developments at Uhde, Uhde’s commissioning experience, experience in plant operation, plant safety and revamping.
The workshop tour at Uhde High Pressure Technologies (Uhde High Pressure Technologies) in Hagen was a special highlight for the participants. For the past 80 years Uhde High Pressure Technologies has been designing and manufacturing high-pressure equipment for the fertiliser industry true to its slogan “Engineered Solutions in High Pressure“. The customers, licensers and suppliers of Uhde could assure themselves of the manufacturing expertise of Uhde’s subsidiary in Hagen and get acquainted with the complete manufacturing program. During the workshop tour the visitors were particularly interested in valve technology and in the pre-fabrication of complete isometrics with subsequent laser measuring to guarantee fast and easy integration into the plant.
At the end of the workshop tour which was organised in 4 groups, the visitors were given the chance to enjoy a refreshment and to discuss their impressions in detail. After a photo had been taken in front of the Uhde High Pressure Technologies building, the participants visited the “Derby of Nitrogen Pioneers“ on the Dortmund racecourse.
