When designing a valve, both a thorough understanding of the process and specific know-how in various fields of engineering such as high-pressure design and control as well as material selection and manufacturing are essential.
Valves are designed and rated for each individual plant in accordance with the prevailing process conditions such as pressure, temperature, flow rate and fluid type. Besides, the aggressive nature of the process media requires an extra attention for the corrosion resistance.
The types of valves are selected according to the required function, the Cv value, characteristic curves and the required safety position. Uhde High Pressure Technologies manufactures all types of valves which are required in the HP section of a urea plant. All valves are completely free of copper-bearing metals. Recent optimization of the product lines covers a modular design in order to easily and cost-efficiently adapt the valves to the varying piping standards of plant contractors. Development is ongoing for the application of new alloy totally avoiding the well-known corrosion problems in HP urea service.

Sizing of process-critical control valves for Urea plants (Cv measurement)
Control valves are used to control process flows. Satisfactory control operation of these valves depends on the fluidic design, particularly the design of the contour of the control cones.
This aim is frequently reached iteratively by fluidic measurements of the valves using empirically given cone contours. However, this procedure can cause considerable costs due to both repeated measurements of the valves and the replacement of the control cones.
An exact forecasting calculation of the cone contour is therefore of great importance with regard to cost-optimized fabrication, especially for high-pressure urea valves of large nominal diameters.
Uhde High Pressure Technologies in Hagen has decades of experience in the design of high-pressure valves.
With regard to the fluidic design of high-pressure valves of large nominal diameters, the accuracy of forecast for Cv values and for the characteristic curve of the valve, especially for valves with relatively high Cv values for world-scale urea plants, will be tested in a section of measurements and documented.
